of landing a large force within the influence of such extraordinary currents has this peculiarity, that about a fourth of the City is separated from the rest by a wall, within which alone the Fortons reside. It has been mentioned that the Cantonments lie outside the Houses and in proximity to the City.
In every male occupant's house, firearms were found, often with a quantity of swords, breastplates, and arrows. The Chinese Troopers have thus established themselves in several places.
The strength of the Chinese front is difficult to estimate. From the best sources of information, I would say they had about 3000 men in their vicinity on the night of the attack, 1900 of whom were Mantchoo Tartars.
I calculate their loss to be about from 12 to 1500 men. I had to estimate my own loss, which, though small, is greater than I anticipated, considering the strength of the position and the obstinate defense of the Chinese.
I beg to annex a list of the killed and wounded. Here, I may be permitted to express my sincere regret at the loss, to the service and to his country, of Lieutenant Colonel... of the Royal Irish, who fell at the head of his troops in the assault by the wall, a most gallant and honourable act.
I have also been deprived of the valuable services of Lt. Colonel Mountain, who has received severe wounds. I trust not dangerous. This meritorious Staff Officer, I have had frequent opportunities of witnessing, and take pleasure in recording. I fear also that for some considerable time we shall be deprived of the services of Captain C... of the 33rd, who is dangerously wounded.
My particular attention has been paid to alleviate the suffering of my other wounded Officers and Soldiers. To Surgeon Dr. Frisch, whose unceasing exertions have done well, I am most thankful to find all are doing well.
The conduct of the whole force calls for my warmest approbation. To Colonel Schoedde, Montgomery, Lieutenant Colonels... and others, my best thanks are due. They will, I am sure, execute every order they received, and were well supported by the several Commanding Officers of regiments.
